​Certificate 2 in Outdoor Recreation - Senior Students

Maroon Outdoor Education Centre can provide nationally recognised training and assessment for units of competence from the Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation (SIS20419) for EQ senior level students enrolled in recreation studies or similar program. School RTOs with this qualification on scope should take responsibility for all assessment.  Take a look at our overview of courses.

Activity training - Teachers

Maroon Outdoor Education Centre can provide nationally recognised training and assessment for units of competence and skill sets from the Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership (SIS30619), and Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership (SIS40621).

We mostly provide training programs for Education Queensland employees (permanent or voluntary) for Curriculum Activity Risk Assessment (CARA) compliance. Recognition of prior learning (PDF, 301KB) may also be available for existing clients upon application. Specialisations are described below.

The assessment and/or training process (PDF, 178KB) document provides guidance on choosing a training and/or assessment mode to gain the qualifications needed. Maroon Outdoor Education Centre generally offers full training programs over at least 3 weekends per activity specialisation.

Step 1- Pre-enrolment and obtaining a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Ensure that you read the pre-enrolment information (PDF, 38KB) before considering a training program with us. You will also need a USI to enrol.

Step 2 - Organise a training course

Maroon OEC conducts training courses for QG units, EQ schools and centres. If your QG unit or EQ institution needs staff trained, contact the Deputy Principal to arrange a group training program.

Our training programs start with a; 

• basic skills course, followed by a;
  
• outdoor leadership skills course. 

These courses are usually conducted separately and total at least 8 days to complete (usually 4 separate weekends or during school vacation).

Basic Skills Courses (Certificate 2 level units)

The basic skills courses are designed to provide you with the opportunity to learn and consolidate foundation skills in an activity before you apply to join one of our outdoor leadership skills programs. You will also be able to participate in an activity with one of our experienced instructors and see them actively guiding.

Activity Skills Personal Practice

Once you have done a basic skills program, you will need to practice! The building skills (PDF, 66KB) document outlines some other ways to build knowledge and skills.

Outdoor Leadership Skills Courses

You must complete an appropriate basic skills course to enrol in an outdoor leadership skills training course.  Please read through the requirements of the course you are interested in. Each of these will take you at least 3 full weekends to complete.

First weekend: applying basic skills > Second weekend: developing guiding skills > Third weekend: guiding skills > assessment (total = minimum 6 days).

Final Assessment

You will be contacted by your Maroon Outdoor Education Centre trainer to organise an assessment time, usually when there are enough other suitable candidates ready. This will take at least a full day depending on the activity and number of candidates being assessed with you.  You will be assessed guiding actual clients (school students, club members or another adult group), preferably your school's students.

Do you need the core units from the Certificate III for CARA compliance or National Outdoor Leadership Registration Scheme (NOLRS) registration?

Your Principal may require you to complete outdoor skills (PDF, 301KB) to obtain the core units from the Certificate III for CARA compliance or a full skill set (for NOLRS registration).  The full course will take at least 3 weekends to complete.  It is advisable to complete this course before enrolling in an activity based program. You will also need a first aid qualification.
